Emergent Structures

Still life

Emergent structures are novel and coherent structures, patterns and properties that emerge via the process of self-organization in complex systems.

Concept 1 | Movement & Chaos

Collectively, humans tend to have a destructive quality to their movements and actions. Our constant need to move and consume leaves the world struggling to meet our demands. This concept aimed to reflect on that notion by seeking beauty in the chaos of humanity both in the individual and larger social structures.

Concept 2 | Stillness & Calm

As individuals, we have the ability to grow and transform ourselves through our day to day actions. Striving for new ways to be more compassionate, patient or loving will ultimately make our connection to our bodies, our communities and our planet much more holistic and unified.

Concept 3 | Turf

This structure was a combination of using naturally occurring emergent structures found on land: trees, roots and stone columns (much like the basalt columns formed by volcanic rock). The initial concept was born of the idea of “returning to one’s roots” and morphed into a combination of emergent structures existing in harmony in one space.

Concept 4 | Surf

Inspired by nature, this structure mimics coral and rock structures found and shaped beneath the ocean waves.
